As an Autoplan broker, Otto & Associates is authorized by ICBC to sell Autoplan coverage. Increased liability coverage and collision and comprehensive coverage, also known as Optional Coverages, may be purchased from ICBC or through various private insurance companies.

Basic Autoplan

Basic Autoplan is the minimum amount of insurance any vehicle must carry in order to legally operate in British Columbia.  Basic Autoplan provides the following coverages (only within Canada and the United States) :

bulletThird Party Liability
bulletAccident Benefits
bulletUnderinsured Motorist Protection
bulletProtection Against Hit-and-Run and Uninsured Motorists
bulletInverse Liability Coverage

Third Party Liability

In British Columbia the basic $200,000 liability is compulsory. This is the minimum coverage that an owner must have on a B.C.-registered personal-use vehicle. If you injure someone else or damage their property in a motor vehicle crash and are held legally responsible, Third-Party Legal Liability coverage pays the injured party's claims on your behalf, up to the specified limit of $200,000.

Accident Benefits

Autoplan Accident Benefits help you with your medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and wage loss if you are injured in a crash. In case of death, it will also cover funeral costs and death benefits. Various limits apply regarding the payouts for costs and losses incurred.

Underinsured Motorist Protection

In the event a motorist who causes an accident doesn't have enough insurance to pay for all of the injuries caused, or does not have any insurance at all, Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) ensures that you, if injured, receive the damages that you are legally entitled to, up to the specified limit of $1,000,000.

Protection Against Hit-and-Run and Uninsured Motorists

All B.C. residents are automatically covered for up to $200,000 if their property is damaged or they are injured or killed by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver on a highway in British Columbia. Each province has a special fund set up to pay for this type of claim, but the Canadian territories and a number of U.S. states do not. Basic Autoplan provides additional coverage if the crash happens on a highway in those areas where there is no special fund. The coverage is limited to the lesser of the compulsory Third-Party Legal Liability limit that applies in the place where the crash happened or $200,000.

Inverse Liability Coverage

Inverse Liability coverage protects you in the parts of Canada and the U.S. where the law won't let you recover losses from a driver who causes a crash. If you are in car accident in one of these areas, Basic Autoplan will pay the cost of repairs of your vehicle, but only for as much as the other driver was held responsible. Thus, if the other driver was held to be 50% at fault for the accident, your Inverse Liability Coverage will pay for 50% of the repairs to your car.

Additional Coverage Is Available

Increased liability coverage and collision and comprehensive coverage may be purchased from ICBC or from a private insurance company.

There are also a number of separate types of coverage that can added to the basic policy. These include :

bulletIncreased Accident Benefits
bulletExcess Underinsured Motorist Coverage
bulletLoss of Use Coverage
bulletReplacement Cost Coverage
bulletLimited Depreciation Policy
