Otto & Associates was incorporated in 1979 on behalf of its original owner Mr. Len Otto. Mr. Otto had previously sold his business in Edmonton, Alberta of the same name the Edmonton and Calgary offices which operated under that same name have recently been sold.) Within the first year Mr. Otto sold a 50% interest in the company to Mrs. Carolynne Leclair, who had previously worked for The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. Mrs. Leclair purchased the remaining interest of Mr. Otto within the next 2 years. From its inception to May 2001 the business grew to be doing approximately $550,000 in General Business with $100,000 in Autoplan Commissions. In May 2001 Shaun McLoughlin joined the firm to become a 50% owner. Mr. McLoughlin's arrival doubled the premium income of the office, resulting in a total commission income in excess of $1,000,000. Carmela Carline joined the firm in November of 2000 and Alex Robertson joined the firm in February of 2004. Both Mrs. Carline and Mr. Robertson moved from the firm Defieux Saxelby Insurance Services, where they had worked together with Shaun for over 10 years. Alex Robertson retired in March of this year to be replaced by Donn York as our Commercial Insurance Manager in the spring of 2011. Donn brings over 15 years if Insurance experience in Personal Lines, Underwriting, and Commercial Lines. He has achieved both the CAIB (Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker) and the CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional designations. Since Shaun joined the firm in 2001 the volume of the office is up almost 5 times what it was previously. The makeup of the business has increased from its former mix of 50% Personal Lines, 45% Automobile and 5% Commercial to what it is today, a mix of 10% Automobile, 20% Personal Lines and 70% Commercial. In February 2002 Otto & Associates dba Block Underwriting Managers was started, specializing in Jewellers Block, Furriers Block, Fine Arts and Scheduled Jewellery. This operation has grown from no income to writing over $ 2,500,000 in premium income on a wholesale basis. Block Underwriting Managers (BUM) was managed by Barb Miller from her home in Ontario, dealing with known Brokers from Alberta to Nova Scotia. All business done by BUM was run through our B.C. office. Unfortunately Barb Miller passed away in March 2011, resulting in all the business previously handled by Barb now being handled out of our West Vancouver office. Mike Forman, the former owner of Sussex Insurance Edgemont, joined Otto and Associates Insurance in June 2008. With his many years of experience we anticipate a further strengthening of both our Commercial and Homeowners business. We believe his presence has greatly enhanced our team. Paul Mendham joined Otto and Associates to head our new Marine Division in March 2011, which is named Navis Insurance Brokers, a division of Otto and Associates. |
